Expansion Joint Steel Beam Connection Detail to Reinforced Concrete Beam

This is a CAD dwg drawing for an Expansion Joint Steel Beam Connection Detail to Reinforced Concrete Beam of two different framed structures. Two different structures might be necessary to be joined together at certain points where installing 2 separate columns might not be feasible. In order to account for the differential movement ( especially horizontal ) between the two an expansion joint is necessary to be detailed properly.

Such a connection is illustrated here, between a steel framed structure and a reinforced concrete structure, where a steel beam is to be connected perpendicularly onto the other building’s concrete beam.

Connection is done with a haunch seat moment resisting connection to the concrete beam, with oval slots connection on top for the steel beam to be connected. This allows for bolts to be able to move horizontally within the oval slots opening, thus releasing all horizontal forces.

By using such a connection, the two buildings even though are connected together and steel beam is supported from the RC beam, are free to move separately horizontally especially in the event of horizontal forces being applied onto them ( such as an earthquake ).

Expansion joint has a 40mm gap, filled with elastic material or foam. An expansion joint cap will of course be needed on top of the finish floor. Reinforced Concrete beam needs to have a large depth in order to support both the reinforced concrete slab on one side and the 2 steel beams on the other. Torsional effects need to be checked.

Of course, if columns are allowed to be installed ( 2 separate columns for each side ), that would be the more preferred method of designing.
