Although walls footing is best to be under the retaining soil for better over-tip stability, it is usually not the case. This type of footing, where the footing is on the favorable high side of soil ( soil acts as a stability load on the footing ) can only be applied in the case where the soil to be retained is an infill / backfill. In this case the retaining wall with its footing is constructed first and then the soil can be backfilled.
